At the end of March 2024, a preliminary working version of the Dutch ID wallet was released. The next phase involves developing the issuance and provision processes and conducting trials. Once recognised by the Dutch government, this ID wallet will enable both citizens and businesses to conduct digital transactions within the Netherlands and other European member states. The precise date when this will be feasible has not yet been determined.
Wallet features
The code for the initial working version of the Dutch ID wallet has been made available on GitHub, and the interfaces on Figma. Upon installing the app, users create a personal PIN. Subsequently, they activate the app using DigiD and their driving licence or identity card. Users then receive ‘cards’ in their ID wallet containing personal information such as name, date of birth, and home address, making the wallet operational. The wallet can then be used, for example, to log into government organisations or share personal data. Future versions will include additional functionalities. Usage of the ID wallet remains voluntary, with the app expected to be available in app stores by late 2026.
Initiating field trials
The initial version of the NL ID wallet is being extensively tested in real-world scenarios. The project team will begin with logging into a municipality and submitting data during a mortgage application. Tests will also determine how easily users can populate the wallet with data and how organisations can request, verify, and use the data from the app.
Demo kit
A demonstration kit for the Dutch ID wallet is available. This kit facilitates discussions on the development of the Dutch public ID wallet. Contact the programme if you would like more information or to engage in discussions about its development. For further details or to participate in discussions, visit the community on Pleio.
