Have you and your team paused to think about the ethical aspects of data applications? The Realisation IBDS (Inter-administrative Data Strategy) programme has developed a scientifically supported method for this: the Data Dialogue. This ethical discussion leads to well-founded considerations and different options for courses of action by enabling you to clearly substantiate decisions about data use. This is crucial for the implementation of regulations and service delivery to the public.
Data use is often vital for improving service delivery and addressing societal challenges. However, responsible data usage also involves legal, technical, and ethical challenges, such as the balance between privacy and security.
Why opt for a Data Dialogue?
The Data Dialogue is a methodical discussion about the ethical aspects of data application within a specific context. For example, what values are at stake if you want to use camera footage or datasets that were not initially collected for that purpose?
Outcomes of such a dialogue include:
- Different options for courses of action: Adjustments in technology, organisation, or behaviour that reduce negative effects or protect certain values and ethical principles. This ensures a data application is responsibly deployed or discontinued.
- Considerations to support careful political or administrative decision-making.
- Reasons to challenge legislation when existing laws lead to socially undesirable outcomes.
