The revised eIDAS Regulation has been formally approved by the Council of the European Union. This establishes a European framework that allows the use of nationally recognised ID wallets across Europe. This adds a third option for logging in across member states, alongside existing Dutch solutions such as DigiD and eHerkenning.
What can you do with an ID wallet?
Soon, citizens will have the option to use a recognised ID wallet for free if they choose. An ID wallet allows you to store personal information, such as your name and date of birth, and use it for simple and secure online identification without sharing more than the necessary data. It offers control over the amount of information you wish to share, usable in interactions with government organisations, banks, or online stores. Additionally, it facilitates the easy digital signing of documents and secure storage of personal documents such as driver’s licenses or diplomas for future use.
Digital business in Europe
The revised eIDAS regulation is expected to come into effect by the end of April 2024. All European citizens and businesses will be able to execute digital transactions using an ID wallet. The precise start date depends on the finalisation of technical details currently being established at European level.
The Dutch ID Wallet
The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) is developing an open-source example ID wallet and the Dutch EDI system. Regular meetings are held where citizens, academics, and businesses can ask questions, present ideas, and share concerns.
