On 11 April 2024, the European Commission published a recommendation regarding the transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography (PQC), based on discussions that started in early January this year within the Cyber Working Party on Cyber Issues of the Council.
With the advent of powerful quantum computers, there is a need, both internationally and domestically, to improve security for sensitive communications and confidential information.
PQC as a solution
Switching to post-quantum cryptography as soon as possible is one of the solutions. This new type of cryptography aims to eliminate the vulnerabilities of current asymmetric cryptography. It is based on mathematical problems that are difficult for quantum computers to solve.
Joint roadmap
The recommendation outlines the necessity for a coordinated approach to transitioning to a quantum-safe digital infrastructure. This will assist EU member states in developing a consistent strategy. It marks the first step towards a joint EU roadmap for the transition to post-quantum cryptography.
