State Secretary Van Huffelen has presented the new Child Rights Impact Assessment (CRIA). The CRIA is designed for developers of digital products. Its purpose is to assess whether its products respect children’s rights. The assessment examines aspects of the online service that improve children’s rights as well as those that pose risks to them.
“The digital world changes every day”
The CRIA is one of the initiatives from the Values-Driven Digitalisation Work Agenda and was developed by Considerati and Leiden University on behalf of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). “The digital world changes every day, but the impact of technology on children is not always immediately apparent. It is crucial that we ensure that children’s rights are also well protected in the digital world,” says Van Huffelen.
Collective effort
The government aims to help children take advantage of the opportunities of the online world while protecting them from online dangers. This is a collective task, requiring active contributions from scientists, businesses, governments, parents, schools, and children. To achieve this, the cabinet is taking various measures. This parliamentary brief (Dutch) dated 14 July 2023 outlines the actions taken and the forthcoming plans.
