What is eIDAS?
eIDAS stands for ‘Electronic Identities And Trust Services’. This framework represents an agreement among European member states to adopt uniform concepts, consistent levels of reliability, and a shared digital infrastructure. A key aspect of this regulation is the cross-border use of European-approved login tools, enabled through a dependable online identity verification at the start of the process.
Can your organisation grant access to European citizens and businesses?
Since 29 September 2018, Dutch government organisations and private entities with public responsibilities must accept European-approved login methods in their digital services. This is a mutual agreement under the eIDAS regulation among EU member states, making online interactions within Europe easier and safer.
Fundamentally, this implies that citizens with an approved login method are enabled to execute the same tasks as other citizens within any member state. Consequently, service providers offering digital access are encouraged to recognise not only Dutch but also login methods approved across Europe. For instance, a German citizen can employ their German login details to access the Central Judicial Collection Agency (CJIB) website to pay a fine for a traffic violation in the Netherlands.
Trust services
Electronic trust services boost confidence in online transactions among businesses and consumers. These include electronic signatures, authenticity seals, and time stamps. They, too, fall under the eIDAS regulation.
