On 8 July, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands signed the application to establish the EDIC Digital Commons and submitted it to the European Commission.
The purpose of the EDIC is to strengthen the digital autonomy of Europe and its member states. The EDIC Digital Commons is directly linked to the recently published Netherlands Digitalisation Strategy (NDS).
Enhancing digital autonomy
To enhance our digital autonomy, Europe needs to develop more products and services domestically. The EDIC Digital Commons will serve as a platform, both physical and digital, linking businesses, civil society organisations, scientists, and governments. It will facilitate funding, offer support, and expand networks.
Decision European Commission
For now, member states are waiting for the Commission’s decision. Once approved, the European Union will fund almost €2.5 million of the EDIC budget and member states will contribute over €2.8 million.
