Can you trust every QR code? How to identify unsecured Wi-Fi networks? And, what are the best ways to use a public computer securely? Veiliginternetten.nl provides the answers to these questions and several tips to help you stay secure online while on holiday. We highlighted the 5 most relevant tips here.
Tips for a secure online holiday
Whether you are on holiday, travelling or working remotely away from home, these tips will help you maintain online security no matter where you are:
- Use your data bundle or a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to browse the internet securely. After all, it is difficult to identify an unsecured Wi-Fi network, and public Wi-Fi networks are often poorly secured.
- Create a secure copy of your ID with the KopieID app (available in the Google Play and App Store). This app renders specific details unreadable, such as your citizen service number (BSN).
- If you plan to use a public computer, carefully consider its intended purpose. Certain activities, such as online banking, are best avoided on a public device. Do not save passwords and delete your browser history after each visit.
- If possible, leave your work laptop or phone at home.
- If you receive a link, such as one for a day out, always verify the sender before clicking.
