European Data Act Has Come into Force

European Legislation 12 September 2025

Effective 12 September 2025, the Data Act has come into force. People who use connected devices, such as smartwatches and cars, will have greater control over the data generated by these devices.

The Data Act also improves access to high-quality data. It outlines rules for broader data availability to encourage innovation, competitiveness, and the growth of Europe’s digital economy. Additionally, government agencies can access third-party data, but only for a legitimate purpose, such as an emergency.

Cloud services

Furthermore, businesses and consumers can switch to other cloud services more easily. They can also connect services from different cloud providers. It will also be easier for local authorities to transfer data and applications from one provider to another.

Background

The Data Act, alongside the Data Governance Act, is part of the European data strategy. The strategy aims to make the EU a global leader in data-driven commercial activities and to enhance prosperity and well-being across Europe.

Would you like to learn more about the Data Act? The website of the European Commission offers a brief overview of what the Data Act entails on its page Data Act Explained.
