Over the past 6 months, 3 standards have become mandatory for government bodies. The standards in question, NL-SBB, NL GOV CloudEvents, and Federated Service Connectivity (FSC), were added to the ‘comply or explain’ list of the Standardisation Forum (Forum Standaardisatie, Dutch). This step further strengthens the Generic Digital Infrastructure (GDI), helping government organisations improve their digital services.
These standards are also vital to the Federated Data System (FDS, Dutch), which enables government agencies to share data in a straightforward, transparent, secure, and trustworthy manner. As public organisations increasingly exchange data, clear agreements and technical standards are essential, both to tackle societal challenges and to offer proactive services to citizens and businesses.
Each standard’s unique purpose
The 3 standards support various aspects of data sharing:
- NL-SBB helps organisations define dataset terms consistently to make discovery easier.
- NL GOV CloudEvents allows systems to be automatically notified when a dataset changes or an event occurs.
- FSC standardises the links between organisations, ensuring that data sharing is manageable, transparent, secure, and traceable.
A common basis for data sharing
Incorporating these standards into the GDI and granting them ‘comply or explain’ status provides clearer guidance. It also helps government organisations adopt these standards to better align with each other. Organisations sharing data or connecting systems will implement these standards. This way, they will be gradually creating a common basis for data sharing within the Federative Data System, in accordance with the NDS priority on Data.
