Electronic ordering: an increasingly common practice

Digital Business 8 June 2026

In 2025, the Dutch government sent more than 200,000 electronic orders (e-orders) to suppliers. A quarter of these were processed through the Peppol network. Electronic ordering is expected to become even more widespread, making government procurement more efficient and reliable.

Similar to e-invoices, e-orders are transmitted directly between systems. Suppliers can process incoming e-orders immediately and automatically send an e-invoice in return. Organisations use the Peppol network to ensure secure and reliable message exchange.

Successful implementation at DJI

The Dutch Custodial Institutions Agency (DJI) already uses e-ordering with its suppliers. For penal institutions, smooth ordering and delivery processes are essential. Fast processing and delivery of orders contribute to calm among detainees and stability within the facilities. DJI is connected to the Peppol network via Digipoort (Dutch), which provides access to suppliers. Messages are automatically checked and delivered. This enables further automation of the entire process, from ordering (e-ordering) to invoicing (e-invoicing).
