A Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) document is available for the European roadmap on transitioning to post-quantum cryptography (PQC), also known as quantum-safe cryptography.
In June 2025, the European Commission’s PQC working group released a roadmap outlining the schedule for adopting quantum-safe cryptography and sought feedback from various stakeholders. The document addresses the following main topics:
- Assessing quantum risks and setting priorities
- Implementing hybrid solutions
- Achieving milestones and taking steps
- Creating (national) roadmaps
The European Union’s role
View the document on the European Union website. The link to the roadmap and timeline is at the bottom of the page.
The Dutch co-chairs of the European working group are the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
Why this matters
With the advent of powerful quantum computers, most cryptography will no longer be secure. It is therefore essential that all (government) organisations and IT suppliers begin preparations now to manage the risks of quantum technology for cryptography in time.
