Handy Overview of European Digital Initiatives

Europe 23 February 2024

A man writing notes on a new page of a notepad.

Across Europe, there are various digitalisation initiatives that can be beneficial for decentralised government, for instance, in achieving their digital objectives. How do you keep track of the networks and platforms involved in these efforts? Kenniscentrum Europa Decentraal (KED) has compiled a useful overview.

On the KED website, you will find a list of projects, networks, and platforms sharing knowledge and practical examples in areas such as:

  • Digital Society accessibility;
  • Privacy and data;
  • Cybersecurity;
  • Technology and market.

Examples include:

  • The European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN), a knowledge exchange platform that also facilitates regional collaboration by supporting members (e.g., regions, provinces, and cities) in innovation projects.
  • Open Source Data Lakes for Smart Cities (ODALA), a collaboration between European cities, businesses, and research institutes to improve data management and sharing between cities and regions.
  • Living-in.EU, supports cities and regions in amplifying their digital transformation, for example, by organising events and working groups.

Explore the list of European initiatives (available in Dutch).

KED

The KED informs and advises central and decentralised governments on European law and policy in understandable language. The initiative was established in 2002 by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK), the Association of Dutch Municipalities (in Dutch, Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten or VNG), the Interprovincial Consultation (IPO), and the Dutch Water Authorities (in Dutch, Unie van Waterschappen or UvW).

Digital government.nl also shares information on digital transformation in the European Union. In our Europe and International file, you will learn more about digital government within Europe.
