Recently, the Global Index on Responsible AI (GIRAI) was presented in Washington. The Netherlands is ranked number one on the list. The GIRAI evaluates the state of responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in 138 countries. Local researchers in each country answered over 1800 questions, collectively gathering more than two million data points which were then analysed by a range of esteemed scientists and organisations.
Conclusions
These are  some of the conclusions researchers drew from the Global Index on Responsible AI:
- International collaboration is crucial in the deployment and use of responsible AI.
- The safety, security, and reliability of AI systems need improvement.
- Workers in AI-driven economies are insufficiently protected.
- Universities and civil society play a vital role in promoting responsible AI.
- There is still a long way to go to achieve adequate levels of responsible AI globally.
Dutch efforts
The Netherlands’ top ranking in this international index is a source of national pride. There is significant focus on the responsible deployment of AI in the country:
- ELSA (Ethical Legal Societal) labs and ICAI (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence) labs collaborate with businesses, government, academia, and civil society organisations to develop specific solutions.
- Numerous coalitions, foundations, and communities are working towards greater awareness, maturity, and education.
- Efforts are being made to develop frameworks and impact assessments around the use of AI and algorithms.
- Various lectureships and faculties within Dutch colleges and universities are involved with algorithms and AI.
Regional tour
To share the existing knowledge with governments, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is organising a Regional Tour AI and Algorithms for Government. The first stop will be in the city of Assen on Friday, 12 July. All government employees are invited to attend. An interactive morning programme will provide updates on the algorithm registry, the algorithm framework, the implementation of the AI Regulation in government, and other algorithm and AI-related developments.
