The government has launched a new international AI strategy. It aims to ensure AI is used safely, responsibly and in a future-proof manner, with a strong emphasis on public values, international collaboration, and on strengthening the Netherlands’ and Europe’s standing in AI.
AI as a key strategic technology
AI has a significant impact on the economy, security and international relations. Countries that lead in AI strengthen their competitiveness, autonomy and geopolitical influence. The strategy emphasises that the Netherlands must reduce its dependence on other countries.
The strategy focuses on 3 key objectives:
- Strengthening competitiveness.
- Increasing AI sovereignty.
- Ensuring the safe and responsible use of AI.
International collaboration is key
The strategy sets out concrete lines of action for international collaboration. The Netherlands aims to:
- Encourage joint investment in AI ecosystems.
- Improve access to international markets.
- Build strategic partnerships across the AI value chain.
- Strengthen international norms and standards to ensure the safe use of AI.
The government emphasises that AI is developing rapidly and that international agreements are needed to manage risks, including the misuse of advanced AI models and human rights violations.
Opportunities for Dutch sectors
The strategy highlights that AI presents substantial opportunities for Dutch industries, enabling faster innovation and strengthening their international presence.
The international AI strategy provides the framework for a government-wide AI approach. Over the coming period, the government will work with international partners, businesses, research institutions and European organisations to implement these lines of action.
