What is digital accessibility?

Millions of people in the Netherlands live with one or more disabilities, including blindness, visual impairments, colour blindness, deafness, hearing difficulties, physical disabilities, intellectual challenges, autism, or low literacy skills. Websites and apps that are designed to be digitally accessible can be used effectively by these users as well.

Everyone should be included

In the Netherlands, we believe that public facilities should be accessible to all citizens. Every individual has the right to participate fully in society, just like anyone else. That’s why buildings should be wheelchair accessible, and why the Netherlands is working hard to make public transport more accessible for people with disabilities.

The same principle applies to digital services. In today’s society, it’s almost impossible to get by without the internet and computers. And many people wouldn’t want to. That’s why digital accessibility is so important and mandatory for all government organisations. When websites follow accessibility standards, they can be used by everyone, including visitors with disabilities. That way, everyone truly can take part.
